Apple Intelligence has started rolling out in iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. The release of this suite marks the first major expansion of Apple’s artificial intelligence (AI) program, promising to make Siri smarter and boost device sales for the Cupertino-based company.
The AI system was introduced in June. It comprises multiple generative algorithms designed to write and refine text, prioritize and summarize notifications, create images, and perform actions to simplify interactions with other applications, according to the company. It shares a close relationship with ChatGPT and the GPT-4o model developed by OpenAI. Developers state that “Apple Intelligence combines the power of various models and personal context to deliver useful and relevant functionalities.” They add that it is capable of performing various tasks with superior efficiency compared to similar tools.
The resource was launched in beta for developers and select users in August. As of today, it is available as a public update on Apple’s operating systems. However, the organization notes that Apple Intelligence is still “a product in development” and its functions are preliminary.
Apple Intelligence is available in English in most regions of the world, except China. In the European Union, it is only available on macOS Sequoia 15.1. The feature will be adapted for Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and South Africa by the end of this year. Support for languages such as Spanish, French, Chinese, and Japanese will be added in 2025.
The AI model suite is compatible with iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. It is also compatible with iPad and Mac models featuring an M1 chip or later. Devices must have 4 gigabytes of free storage to activate the update.
The launch of Apple Intelligence tailored for the Mexican market and other Latin American countries is scheduled for next year. However, those interested in accessing the feature now can do so by adjusting their iPads, iPhones, or Macs. In the settings tab, select the “General” option, then click on “Language & Region” to change the operating system language to English.
Users should go to the “Settings” section, choose “Apple Intelligence & Siri,” and set “English (United States)” as the default language. A waitlist for AI access will appear on-screen. “Apple Intelligence is usually available for activation a few hours after joining the list, though times may vary. You’ll receive a notification when it’s ready for activation on your device,” Apple explains.
Apple Intelligence arrives with limited features in its initial rollout. The company claims the toolset will be updated in December. For now, its AI system can generate text, create summaries, and manipulate images. Key capabilities currently include:
